Lipid Emulsions in Critically Ill Infants

Fish oil reducing Inflammatory markers after open heart surgery. [Larsen, Clin Nutrition 2012; 322]

  • RCT prospective study on critically ill neonates
  • Intralipid [n=16] vs Lipoplus [n=16]
  • Age: 10.6days
  • EN – <30kcal/kg/day
  • 3.5g /kg/day

Results

  • No serious adverse events
  • Inflammatory markers [TNF α, cytokines]
  • Significantly higher prior and after surgery in Intralipid
  • Sepsis increased in Intralipid
  • Increased LOS if TNFα was increased in control
  • Pro-inflammatory cytokines lower in treatment

Fish oil – may be therapeutic strategy in critically ill infant to alter inflammatory response
